Child abuse is increasing rapidly in Japan, even though the Child Abuse Prevention Law has been in effect for 8 years.Parents’and children’s behavior and conditions are examples of factors.The purpose of this study was to find factors contributing to child-care stress in mothers, as measured by the Childcare Stressor Scale and the Scale of Burden of Childcare. We surveyed 46 mothers at a health facility in a town in Nagano prefecture using self-questionnaires with questions in five categories: mother’s incompetence in child care, restriction of child care,lack of social and family support for infant care,character of their child,and lack of knowledge and skill about child care. The results showed that the lack of knowledge and skill in providing care, lack of social and family support for infant care, and the character of their child were important factors in increasing stress in the mothers. We made three suggestions for supporting mothers caring for infants : providing opportunities for them to learn child care skills, educating fathers to support their partners, and establishing social consultation networks. |
