We first discuss how languageacquisition occurs in mother tongue, second language, and foreign language settings, taking into consideration the critical period and culture as well as the opportunity for and quantity of input in each setting. In light of the above, we suggest that Japan is an English as a foreign language (EFL) setting where it is difficult to improve students’ English ability due to the lack of exposure and small quantity of suitable input. Thereafter, we identify some teaching methods appropriate for Japanese classrooms, pointing out, however, the weak points of those teaching methods. Next, we discuss those weak points from the standpoint of second language acquisition and bilingual education theory.
