Some oral surgeons and otorhinolaryngologists have reported excellent results after frenotomies. However, some pediatrists have thrown doubt on the necessity of many such operations, noting that surgeons have no definite criteria on which to base their decisions to perform such frenotomies. In this study, we performed a clinico-statistical observation and conducted a questionnaire survey. The subjects of the observation were 77 infants who had received frenotomies at Matsumoto Dental College Hospital, and the mothers of these infants were asked to participate in the questionnaire survey. The results were as follows: 1. Most of the infants who received the frenotomy were one or two months old. 2. 49 of the infants were treated for shortened upper lip frenula, 18 for tongue-tie, and 10 received both operations. 3. A little under 80 percent of cases had been referred by maternity nurses who engaged in breast-feeding instruction. 4. About 40 percent of mothers complained of the baby's poor suckling, about 10 percent complained of "breast trouble", and the remainder expressed both complaints. 5. In about 80 percent of the cases, the mothers noticed changes for the better within one week of the operation. This suggestes that above all, early plastic correction of an upper lip frenulum results in a marked improvement in breast-feeding for infants who suffer from enfolding of the lip. 6. With proper management, operation related stress was only slight, and no significant complications were observed. 7. In oder to establish criteria on which to base decisions for the necessity of such operations, movements of the lip or tongue should be investigated quantitatively., application/pdf}, pages = {25--33}, title = {哺乳障害に対する小帯成形の効果}, volume = {17}, year = {1991} }
